The in-game tutorial is quite good, if you follow it closely and try not to outsmart it (or you might get stuck with 4 non-specialised villager squads but would need something different to advance) you are set for a good start. You start as a farmer and have to get your production chains running by gathering ressources and build housings for more specialised working units. The gameplay available evolves all around your settlement and partly the city of your local lord. There is already a couple of Youtube videos available on go-throughs of the game itself, but to sum it up, here is my take on it.
